What are emotions? I describe emotions as the feelings we feel which drive our actions. Everyone feels emotions differently. When faced with the same circumstance, different people feel different emotions. Even when the emotions are similar, the intensity of it can differ. For those who feel a higher intensity of emotions, we usually describe them as emotional. The term “emotional” generally has a negative connotation to it. However, we are all but human and emotions are just part of human nature. We should embrace our emotions, give them some love and learn to manage them to generate better outcomes for our lives.
Our emotions are so powerful. Our emotions are our motivation, our drive, our passion, our addiction, our drug. It’s the feeling that drives our actions. When we want a certain material possessions, let’s say a luxury car, what we want is not the actual car itself, it’s more about the feeling the car makes us feel when we own it. Essentially, a regular car and a luxury car do the same thing, they are just a means of transportation. Why do so many people lust over luxury cars? The reason lies in the emotions attached to them. It make us feel good about ourselves, it makes us feel more expensive and of higher status, we like the way people perceive us when driving the car. It’s all about satisfying the emotion. There’s absolutely nothing wrong about wanting or driving a luxury car, I’m a big fan of luxury cars myself. What I’m trying to say here is, we based our actions on how we feel. In other words, our emotions control our decisions, the decision we make every single day is directly affected by how we feel inside.
If you are into Astrology, you would know how intense emotions can feel for a person with their moon sign in Pisces. It seems like the emotions are placed under a super magnifying glass when triggered. My emotions have always been a struggle for me. It took me years and years to accept the fact that my out of contro emotion is the root cause of most my problems in life. When you are in it, it’s extremely hard to see with clarity. So, if you are in the same position and you happen to stumble upon this post, I urge you to take it as a sign from the universe to do something today.
If we do not learn to manage our emotions, it will overpower us and lead us to make irrational or regrettable decisions in life. Learning to manage our emotions is a form of art, everybody does it differently and you get better and better with practice. Managing our emotions does not make us emotionless, we are not trying to hide it here, but merely just making it work to our favor.
Don’t shove your emotions under the cover.
When we try to hide our emotions, it will disconnect us from who we truly are. Our emotions tell us a lot about ourselves, it tells us about what we value and what we truly want in life. Hiding or suppressing our feelings will not make it go away. In fact, because they do not get a chance to be processed, the pressure can build up intensively causing an explosion of emotions. We want to be able to catch it at the root, so it’s easier for us to manage it.
Acknowledging the emotion.
When a negative emotion arises, don’t push it away, acknowledge the feeling. Notice that you feel a certain way and know that it’s alright for you to feel angry/sad/jealous/stressed. Give the part of yourself some love and take ownership of the emotion. Try to understand why you feel that way. What’s the trigger? Is there any underlying causes to that feeling? Sometimes, our emotions can be so overwhelming that we are unable to identify what we are actually feeling. I find it helpful to give the emotion a name, not a judgment, just merely a name. Instead of feeling all over the place, you can identify yourself as feeling e.g. sad. This helps you to find a perspective and make the process of managing it much easier.
Replacing the negative emotion with a positive thought.
After acknowledging and giving our negative emotions some love, we can move on to instilling ourselves with more positive energy. I like a giving myself a pep talk filled with “I am” statements. I find them to be so powerful and uplifting.
Change is the only thing that stays constant in our ever-changing world. We cannot control what happens around us or to us. The only thing that is in our control is how we react to these changes. Take control of your emotions and be in control of your life today. Remember, you are the master of your emotions!
